EcoFlow River 2 Max review: 512Wh LFP, 500W output (1,000W X-Boost), 60-min full charge and 220W solar. Specs, runtimes, pros/cons and who should buy it.

This is a research-based review. Specs are verified against EcoFlow's official US product pages — we do not claim hands-on testing.

The EcoFlow River 2 Max is the middle child of the River 2 line done right: 512Wh of LiFePO4 capacity and 500W of AC output in a box that weighs just 13.4 lbs. It is big enough for a weekend of camping electronics, a CPAP overnight, or keeping lights, Wi-Fi and phones alive through a short outage — and it recharges from a wall outlet in just 60 minutes, among the fastest in its class.

If you need more capacity in the same family, our EcoFlow River 2 Pro review covers the larger 768Wh, 800W sibling, while EcoFlow's newer generation is covered in our EcoFlow River 3 Plus review. The River 2 Max remains the value pick when 512Wh is enough and price matters.

What Makes the River 2 Max Stand Out

60-minute full recharge

With 660W of AC input, the River 2 Max goes from empty to full in 60 minutes — EcoFlow rates that as about 5x faster than typical portable stations and 38% quicker than the previous generation. For outage prep and last-minute trips, that speed matters more than almost any other spec: you can top it up while you pack.

LFP battery built for a decade

The LiFePO4 cells are rated for 3,000 cycles to 80%+ capacity. EcoFlow translates that to roughly 10 years of regular use — about six times the cycle life of older lithium-ion stations. The River 2 series was also the first portable power station line to earn TÜV Rheinland safety certification, backed by a battery management system that monitors voltage, current and temperature.

500W output, 1,000W with X-Boost

The 500W continuous rating covers laptops, TVs, mini-fridges, fans and most small appliances. X-Boost lets it run resistive loads up to 1,000W — EcoFlow says that covers up to 80% of essential appliances, such as a sandwich maker or small vacuum, though runtimes on those loads will be short from 512Wh.

Four ways to charge

AC wall charging, solar (up to 220W), car charging (100W), and USB-C (100W). With solar, EcoFlow quotes up to about 1.5kWh of generation a day in good sun — which is why this model keeps appearing in our best portable power stations for camping shortlists for off-grid weekends.

What Can It Run? Realistic Runtimes

EcoFlow River 2 Max portable power station in use outdoors

Using the standard 85% usable-capacity estimate for inverter losses (512Wh × 0.85 ≈ 435Wh usable):

  • Phone (11Wh): about 35+ charges
  • Laptop (50–60Wh): about 7 charges
  • Wi-Fi router (10W): about 40 hours
  • LED light (10W): about 40 hours
  • CPAP (40W, no heated humidifier): about 10 hours — see our CPAP overnight sizing guide for the full math
  • Mini fridge (50–80W cycling): roughly 6–12 hours depending on duty cycle
  • TV (100W): about 4 hours
  • Electric kettle (1,000W via X-Boost): short bursts only — minutes, not hours

For a full-size home refrigerator during a longer outage, step up in capacity — our EcoFlow Delta 2 review covers the 1,024Wh class. The River 2 Max is an essentials-and-portability play, not a whole-home backup. It also earns its place in our best budget portable power stations under $500 roundup on value per watt-hour.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Fastest-in-class 60-minute AC recharge
  • Long-life LFP battery: 3,000 cycles, 5-year warranty
  • Very light for its capacity at 13.4 lbs
  • <30ms EPS switchover for routers, CPAP and other essentials
  • Four charging options including 220W solar and 100W USB-C
  • Strong value at around $289 as of October 2026

Cons

  • 500W continuous output limits larger appliances without X-Boost
  • Not expandable — no extra-battery option
  • 512Wh is short for multi-day outages or a full-size fridge
  • No wireless charging pad or built-in light

FAQ

How long does the River 2 Max take to charge?

About 60 minutes from a wall outlet at its 660W max AC input. Solar charging with up to 220W takes roughly 3–6 hours in good sun, car charging is 100W, and USB-C charging is 100W.

Can the River 2 Max run a CPAP overnight?

Yes for most setups. At around 40W without heated humidifier, expect roughly 10 hours from the ~435Wh usable capacity. Turning off heated humidification and tube heating extends runtime significantly.

Can it run a refrigerator?

It can run a mini-fridge or a small efficient fridge for several hours, and start many full-size fridges on surge, but 512Wh is not enough for a full day of full-size fridge backup. Step up to a 1kWh+ station for that job.

What is X-Boost?

EcoFlow's X-Boost lowers voltage slightly so resistive loads rated up to 1,000W can run on the 500W inverter. It works for heating-element appliances; it does not increase the true 500W continuous rating for electronics or motors.

Is the River 2 Max expandable?

No. Unlike the Delta series, the River 2 Max has no extra-battery port. If you think you will need more capacity later, consider the River 2 Pro or a Delta model instead.

River 2 Max vs River 2 Pro — which should I buy?

Buy the Max for value and portability (512Wh, 500W, 13.4 lbs, around $289 as of October 2026). Buy the Pro if you need 768Wh and 800W for longer runtimes or hungrier appliances.

Verdict

The EcoFlow River 2 Max is one of the easiest recommendations in the 500Wh class: LFP longevity, a genuine 60-minute recharge, useful 500W output with 1,000W X-Boost headroom, and a 13.4 lb carry weight at around $289 as of October 2026. It will not replace a home backup system, but for camping, road trips, CPAP backup and short outages it covers the essentials better than most rivals at the price. If you need more, step up to the River 2 Pro or Delta 2 — otherwise, this is the sweet spot.
